Smart Vehicle Systems

Cognometrics conducted a variety of internal research and development projects as well as specific projects for the General Motors Corporation aimed at developing new intelligent vehicle and active safety systems. These include:

Parking Lot Algorithm Preventing unsafe resumption of high speed cruise control settings is an important component of vehicle safety. Cognometrics created an intelligent vehicle control that uses driver input and vehicle state data to detect a driving environment and prevent the resumption of an earlier-established cruise control speed setting when it would be unsafe to do so (e.g. in a school zone, a parking lot, etc.). A patent has been applied for by GM, which is deploying the invention in certain production vehicles.
Driver Eye Gaze Classifier Accurate determination of the focus of a driver's eye gaze is an important ITS component as it is an indicator of driver distraction that can be used to trigger a driver alert warning. Knowledge of driver eye gaze patterns can also be used to improve the design of vehicle displays and controls. Using driver input and vehicle state data, along with machine learning to train the on-board system to recognize driving patterns associated with eye gaze positions of typical drivers, Cognometrics developed a classifier that determines, with high accuracy, whether a driver's eyes are on or off the road.

Transportation Network Modeling

Transportation Modeling for the US Department of Transportation While fully autonomous driving systems are still in their infancy, many limited autonomous driving mechanisms, such as lane keeping, cruise control and crash avoidance systems have been widely and successfully deployed. These systems provide partial control of a vehicle for limited periods, with a human driver supervising the activation, deactivation and operation of the system. To investigate the applicability of autonomous driving in the US transportation network, Cognometrics successfully modeled lane keeping in the US DOT TRANSIMS (Transportation Analysis and Simulation) System.

Active Safety Systems

Cognometrics worked with the Eaton Corporation to enhance its forward, side and rear crash warning systems by improving the crash warning algorithm and upgrading the quality of data coming to it
